What Is a Call-Out Charge?
A call-out charge is a fee your washing machine engineer charges just for coming to your home — before any work is done. It covers their travel time, fuel costs, and the first part of their labour time spent diagnosing the fault. In the UK, call-out charges for washing machine repairs typically range from £50 to £90.
Is the Call-Out Fee Deducted from the Repair Cost?
This varies by engineer and is one of the most important questions to ask before booking. There are two common models:
Model 1 — Inclusive pricing: The call-out fee is deducted from the total repair cost if you proceed. You effectively pay for the diagnosis as part of the job. This is the more customer-friendly model and is common among sole-trader engineers.
Model 2 — Separate fee: The call-out charge is payable regardless of whether you go ahead with the repair. If you decide not to proceed, you still owe the call-out fee. This model is more common with larger repair companies.
Always clarify this before booking. A reputable engineer will be upfront about it.
What Does the Call-Out Fee Cover?
A standard call-out typically includes travel to your property, initial diagnosis of the fault (usually 30–45 minutes), and a quote for the repair. Some engineers will carry common parts in their van and can complete the repair on the same visit — in which case the call-out is rolled into the overall price.
Can You Avoid the Call-Out Charge?
In most cases, no — and nor should you want to. The diagnosis is where an experienced engineer earns their money. Misdiagnosing a fault can result in unnecessary parts being ordered, so a thorough assessment upfront protects both of you. What you can do is make sure the call-out fee is clearly agreed in writing before the visit, and confirm whether it is included in or additional to the repair quote.
Same-Day vs Next-Day Callouts
Emergency or same-day callouts often carry a premium — you may pay £20–£40 more than a standard booked appointment. If your machine is not urgently needed (for example, you have access to a launderette), booking a standard appointment rather than emergency call-out can save money without significantly impacting your situation.
