Can Cold Weather Damage a Washing Machine?

For machines installed in heated indoor spaces — a kitchen, utility room, bathroom — cold weather is unlikely to directly affect the machine. Problems arise when machines are installed in unheated outbuildings, garages, or conservatories where temperatures can drop below 0°C in winter. Freezing conditions can damage inlet valves, hoses, and — in severe cases — the outer drum.

The most common cold-weather washing machine problem is a frozen inlet hose or the pipe feeding the machine. Symptoms: machine fills very slowly or not at all; an inlet/water supply error code is displayed. Do not force water through a frozen pipe — allow the pipe to thaw naturally at room temperature, or apply warm (not boiling) water in a cloth around the affected section. Boiling water on frozen pipes can crack them.

Protecting an Outdoor Installation

If your machine is in an unheated space, consider: insulating the inlet pipe and the machine itself with foam pipe lagging; keeping a low level of heating in the space during extreme cold; or, for machines used infrequently in winter, draining the machine down (run a short cycle with the water turned off to clear standing water from the pump) and disconnecting the water supply until temperatures rise.

Increased Demand on the Heating Element in Winter

Cold inlet water in winter means the machine's element works harder and for longer to reach programme temperature — cycles may take slightly longer than in summer. This is normal. However, if the machine is already struggling with a partially failing element or heavy limescale build-up, cold inlet water may be the factor that pushes it into full failure. A maintenance wash before winter is good practice.

Condensation Issues in Outbuildings

Temperature swings in unheated spaces cause condensation, which can accumulate inside the machine and in the control electronics. If your garage machine is displaying intermittent electronic faults in winter that clear in warmer months, condensation on the control board is a likely cause. An engineer can apply conformal coating to the board to protect it, or you can improve ventilation in the installation space.
