What Is a Standard Repair Warranty?

A warranty on a washing machine repair covers you if the same fault recurs or the repair fails within a specified period. In the UK, the minimum you should accept is 30 days on parts and labour. Most reputable engineers offer 90 days; quality operators typically offer 6–12 months on both parts and labour.

A proper repair warranty should cover: (1) the specific part replaced, against defect or premature failure; (2) the labour carried out, against installation error; (3) the same fault recurring within the warranty period, at no additional charge. It should not be a general warranty on the whole machine — only on the work carried out.

Parts-Only vs Parts and Labour Warranty

Some engineers offer a warranty on parts only, meaning if the part fails you get a replacement part but pay for the engineer's time again. This is less valuable than a parts and labour warranty. Always ask specifically: "Does your warranty cover labour as well as parts if the repair fails within the warranty period?"

Your Rights Under Consumer Law

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, services must be carried out with reasonable care and skill. If a repair fails within a short period because it was not performed correctly, you have the right to request that the trader remedies the issue. Keep documentation of the repair — receipt, description of the work, and the warranty terms agreed.

When a Warranty Does Not Apply

A warranty on a repaired component does not cover other components that subsequently fail. If the engineer replaces your pump and your door seal then fails two months later, the warranty does not extend to the door seal — it only covers the pump and the labour to fit it. This is reasonable and standard; do not confuse a repair warranty with a new-machine guarantee.
