The Four Questions to Answer Before Deciding

Before calling an engineer or heading to a showroom, answer these four questions. They will give you a clear framework for the decision.

Question 1: What Does the Repair Cost?

You cannot make a rational decision without a repair quote. Get a diagnosis — most engineers charge £50–£90 for a visit and will give you a fixed quote for the repair before starting work. Do not guess at the repair cost; a fault that sounds major (a machine that will not start) is sometimes inexpensive (a door lock, £80), while something that sounds minor can be serious.

Question 2: How Much Would a Comparable Replacement Cost?

Look at what a similar specification new machine costs today. If your current machine is a 7kg mid-range model, look at 7–8kg mid-range options in the £350–£500 range. This gives you your replacement benchmark.

Question 3: How Old Is the Machine and What Condition Is It In?

Apply this multiplier to the 50% rule based on age:

Machine ageRepair threshold (of replacement cost)
Under 5 years50–60% — strongly favour repair
5–8 years40–50% — apply 50% rule strictly
8–10 years35% — lean towards replace
Over 10 years25–30% — replace unless premium brand in excellent condition

Question 4: What Is the Fault and Its Prognosis?

Ask your engineer: "If you carry out this repair, what is the likely life remaining in this machine?" A good technician will give you an honest assessment. Mechanical faults (bearings, brushes, pump) are predictable and repairable. Intermittent electronic faults, cracked drums, or extensive corrosion are warning signs that the machine is approaching end of life regardless of any specific repair.

Putting It Together

If the repair cost is below your age-adjusted threshold and the machine is otherwise in good condition with no other known issues, repair is the rational choice. If the cost is above threshold, or if the machine has a history of failures or the engineer expresses doubt about its remaining life, replace. Either way, get a free quote first — you cannot make an informed decision without the repair cost figure.
