When the Warranty Runs Out
The moment a washing machine warranty expires, the manufacturer's obligation to repair or replace at no charge ends. For most UK washing machines, the standard manufacturer warranty is 1–2 years; some premium brands offer 3–5 years on parts and labour. When yours has expired, you have several routes — and some legal protections you may not be aware of.
Your Rights Under the Consumer Rights Act
The manufacturer warranty is separate from your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Under this legislation, goods must be of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose. For appliances, courts have consistently held that a washing machine that fails after 2–3 years is not of satisfactory quality given the expected lifespan of the product. Your claim under the Act is against the retailer, not the manufacturer.
The practical catch: after 6 months from purchase, the burden of proof shifts — you may need to demonstrate the fault was inherent (present at time of purchase) rather than caused by misuse or wear. For a machine that fails at 18 months on a known design fault, this is achievable. For a machine that fails at 4 years with a worn component, it is harder.
Extended Warranties Sold at Point of Purchase
If you purchased an extended warranty from the retailer or a third-party provider (Domestic & General, SquareTrade, etc.) at point of sale, check the policy document carefully. Cover periods, excess fees, and what constitutes a covered fault vary significantly. Some policies cover parts and labour with no excess; others charge an excess per claim that makes them poor value for low-cost repairs.
The Independent Repair Route
For most out-of-warranty repairs, booking an independent engineer and comparing quotes is the most cost-effective route. Without the overhead of a manufacturer service network, independent engineers typically charge 20–30% less for the same repair. Get at least two quotes and ask for a fixed price including parts and labour before any work begins.
Manufacturer Extended Service Plans
Some manufacturers offer the option to purchase an extended service plan directly, even after the standard warranty expires. Bosch, Miele, and Samsung all offer these. They are worth comparing against independent repair costs — on premium machines with expensive parts, manufacturer cover can be competitive.
